  2. IAC Program Description • IACs is a sub-program under the ITP Technology Delivery Area, in DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy • IAC Program goals are: (1) to save energy, reduce waste and improve productivity of small- and medium-sized industrial manufacturers in the US; and (2) to train the “next generation” of energy-savvy engineers. • The Program serves small- and medium-sized manufacturers through a network of 26 Industrial Assessment Centers (IACs) located at universities nationwide. These IACs also train engineering students – the “next generation” of energy professionals.

  3. Overall Goal of the Program • By 2020, 30% decrease in energy intensity of IOF manufacturing • By 2010—Commercialize 10 Technologies

  4. ITP Program Structure Industrial Technologies Technology Delivery Assessments, BestPractices Portfolio & Financial Mgmt. Chemical and Enabling Technologies Advanced Process Systems Metals & MiningMining, Steel, Metal Casting,Aluminum Chemical & Allied Processes Chemicals, Forest Products Industrial Energy Systems Combustion, Supporting Industries, Tool Development Materials, Sensors, & AutomationGlass, Materials, Sensors Golden Field Office, Regional Offices, NETL

  5. Develop, implement, and disseminate best practices in energy management Realize the best energy efficiency and pollution prevention options from a system and life-cycle perspective Encourage corporate energy management strategies Validate and disseminate emerging technologies Technology Delivery - Mission

  6. Activity initiated in 1976 Centers are located at accredited engineering schools Assessments are performedby teams made up of facultyand students Assessments usually entail a one-day site visit Assessments take an integrated approach that considers energy, waste, and productivity Industrial Assessment Centers - Background

  7. IAC Program Metrics • Traditional program metrics include assessment days performed and students trained • 685 Assessment Days Performed • 150 students trained • Recommended and Implemented Energy Savings in both btu’s and dollars • Alumni impacts • Website impacts, including IAC database

  8. IAC Program Priorities • Not uncommon for priorities to rearrange budget cycle to budget cycle – politically motivated • Emphasize energy savings • Emphasize productivity • Emphasize student training and utilization

  9. This Year’s Priorities • Emphasize student training and utilization • Become more prescriptive about “type” and number of students at each Center • Look more at external training, especially the ITP BestPractice system tools and software • Identify other opportunities • “Formalize” student credentials – certificate program – previously was for students not for DOE, thinking otherwise now?
