  1. Welcome to English 93 in the Communications Learning Center

  2. The Communications Learning Center (The CLC) • Is located in Building 5 room 113 • Offers the following courses: • English 93/Independent Study Skills • English 95/Reading Lab • English 98/Writing Lab • English 104/Grammar and Punctuation • English 152/Reading Rate Improvement

  3. English 93 • How many credits are you registered for? • Students may register for 1 to 5 credits. • Core programs: Read and Respond (2-3 credits) or STAT and Test Prep (3 credits) • Optional 1-credit units include: note taking, memory, test taking, 6-way paragraphs, vocabulary, spelling, learning styles, textbook reading and several others.

  4. English 93 • What units will you work on in English 93? • Your individualized program will depend on the courses you are currently taking and the needs you identify.

  5. English 93 • What is a self-paced program? • English 93 is self-paced, which means you will work independently. • Come daily at your assigned time so that you can complete the credits you have registered for. • When you have finished a step or have a question, put your name on the board to see an instructor. • If you must wait to see an instructor, review your work or read your novel while you wait.

  6. English 93 • What materials do I need for English 93? • Depending on your core program, Studying and Thinking about Texts or Read and Respond. • English 93 packet and a 3 ring binder for your packet and papers. • Do not buy your books until after your conference with your instructor. • You may be asked to buy or locate a novel to read for one of your credits—please check with your instructor. • A USB drive is handy for working at home and in the CLC lab.

  7. English 93 • How will my attendance and effort affect my success in English 93? • Please sign in on the attendance computer. • Completing a credit usually requires at least 10 hours (2 weeks) of in-class time; you will need to pace yourself to complete your credits in a timely manner. • If you are taking the READ credit, reading your novel and writing your journal are considered homework. • Usually, you may work to the next step in your unit at home; ask your instructor if you are not sure

  8. English 93 • How does the CLC grading work? • For your English 93 credits, you will receive a Pass (P) for the number of credits you complete. These credits do not affect your GPA, but they DO count for financial aid. • You may enroll in English 93 for up to three quarters.

  9. English 93 • When is CLC open and what is the phone number? • Lab Hours: 7:30 Am—2:00 Pm • Lab Phone: 533-3604 • Please turn all cell phones off or on silent. If you must answer your phone, take the call in the hall. Avoid text messaging, it slows your pace and may result in not completing all of your credits. • Ask your instructor about i-pods and other listening devices.

  10. English 93 • What courses will English 93 prepare me for next quarter? • Your instructor will meet with you before you register for the following quarter to discuss a plan that fits your needs.

  11. English 93 • We look forward to working with you to improve your reading and study strategies for all your college courses.

  12. English 93 • So how do I get started? • For the rest of today and over the next few days, you will do the following: • If you are a returning student, please tell your instructor. • Complete a Reading and Study Strategy Inventory. • Meet with your instructor for a conference. During your conference, your instructor will review your program and answer any additional questions you may have. • Take a 12 minute vocabulary test. • At the end of the first week, you will begin your individualized program.
