  4. The Latino Population Grows • The need for laborers led to changing immigration laws • The Immigration and Nationality Act amendment of 1965 • A sharp increase occurred in the number of Mexicans and other Latinos entering the United States.

  5. Pressing for Equal Rights In the 1960s, Latinos pressed for an end to discrimination in the workplace, schools, housing, and voting rights.

Native Americans Battle Discrimination • Native Americans were inspired by the growing civil rights movement to expand their own push for new rights during the 1960s. • AIM (American Indian Movement) focused on urban ghettos- then to civil rights issues • 1972 March from SF to Washington DC briefly taking control of BIA Occupation of Alcatraz: 1969 – 1971

  11. New Rights for Consumers and the Disabled • New laws were passed protecting consumers and mandating workplace safety regulations. • The government also began exploring ways to help people with disabilities. • Ralph Nadar – attorney started many consumer advocacy groups
