  2. EU Legislation on Driver Training • Directive 2003/59/EC of 15 July 2003 on the initial qualification and periodic training of drivers of certain road vehicles for the carriage of goods or passengers • Date of transposition : 10 September 2006

  3. Initial qualification • Duration • 280 hours • accelerated initial qualification : 140 hours • or • specific test (min. 4h theory and 90 min + 30 min practice) • Specific emphasis on road safety and rationalisation of fuel consumption • Harmonisation with ages in Driving • Licence Directive

  4. Periodic Training • Duration • 35 hours every 5 years given in periods of at least 7 hours • To be differentiated from other training programs (ADR, demerit points…) • Specific emphasis on road safety and • rationalisation of fuel consumption

  5. Timings • Implementation / initial qualification • Transports of passengers : since 10 September 2008 • Transport of goods: from 10 September 2009 • Implementation / periodic training • Within 5 years of the issue of CPC • Period of implementation : no shorter • than 3 years or longer than 7 years (to align with driving licence validity)

  6. Training of professional drivers • No european harmonisation • No clear rules / procedures about subsidies • Autorisation/Certification of Training centres on national or even local Level • Driver needs his C.P.C (Certificate of professional competence) • - without this, his driving licence is no longer valid

  7. Consequences • BBS training of drivers needs to adapt / integrate to the specified periodic training according to the new • Directive 2003/59/EC
