  1. ESL and ELL By: Emily H. and Maria Y.

  2. What is ESL and ELL? ELL: English Language Learner ESL: English as a second language program

  3. Complete immersion an ELL student in English will help them learn faster = not necessarily true. • 9 years of learning in 6 years (1.5 years every year) • Only time and practice can make students fluent

  4. BICS/CALP Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills: • everyday language • used in conversation Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency: • language of academics • vocabulary needed to understand history, geography, sciences and many other subjects

  5. Most English proficiency tests (level of English skills) only test for the BICS • Students are considered fluent in conversation but struggle using English in academic classes • Causes students to be considered unable to learn the language, when they actually just aren’t done learning yet

  6. www.impactlearn.com Challenges • Interference (Literal Translation) • Silent period (Listening not Talking) • Codeswitching (Switching Languages) • Language Loss (Fairly Self Explanatory)

  7. Interference A literal translation from their native language Ex: “esta casa esmasgrande” in Spanish means “ this house is bigger” but in English the literal translation is “ This house is more bigger”. This is what ELL students are more likely to say Silent Period Listening and focus on comprehension rather than talking.

  8. Codeswitching Changing language mid sentence or mid conversation Ex: “ Me gustariamanejar-I’ll take the car” (I’d like to drive, I’ll take my car.) Language Loss Loss of their first language if it is not practiced along with English.

  9. Strategies • Break down things step by step • Be very specific • Be accepting • Try to do activities that incorporate all levels of English in your group

  10. Be very patient • Don’t rush them • Repeat things if necessary • Don’t use your biggest words • Talk to them, have a conversation
