  1. Welcome to the Mentoring Seminar

  2. Welcome We are sorry you are not able to join with us in person but we hope this online experience will provide an introduction to our program and help to build a solid foundation for the FEP internship. On the next slide, you will see a quote that we believe is important and sets the tone for this mentoring session.

  3. “We Americans think you have to accomplish everything quickly. We’re a country of thirty-minute power lunches and two- minute football drills…. Haji Ali taught me to share three cups of tea, to slow down and make building relationships as important as building projects. He taught me that I had more to learn from the people I work with than I could ever hope to teach them.” ~Greg Mortenson, Three Cups of Tea Fall, 2009

  4. So sit back (perhaps with a cup of tea) and meet Kenny Salim. Clip 1 Intern Kenny is an advanced doctoral student at HGSE. He has been an intern in the Harvard Urban Superintendent’s Program under the mentorship of Dr Arlene Ackerman, previously Superintendent of San Francisco and currently Superintendent of Philadelphia. FEP Mentor Kenny is currently the Director of the Office of New Teacher Support in the Boston Public Schools. He has served as a mentor for a number of FEP interns.

  5. Your mentoring history plays a key role in how you will enter into this relationship. Think about the who, how and what below. Then take a moment and fill out your mentoring history handout. supported your career development? Personal Experience & Mentoring History WHO HOW did they do it? WHAT brought you to your work & keeps you coming back?

  6. FEP: The Integration of Learning Domains Rigorous Coursework provides new knowledge and opportunities for reflection. Reflection provides an inner eye, a way of seeing differently. Supervisors provide the most critical component by offering insight and expertise on issues rarely covered in a textbook Internships offer the chance to develop new skills and test out theoretical frames in real-life situations. • Theory • Practice • Reflection • Mentoring

  7. Great Expectations • Although we enter most relationships with expectations, we rarely explicitly state them. • Unmet expectations are one of the biggest challenges in formal mentoring relationships. • We would like to spend some time thinking about and explicitly sharing your expectations for this semester.

  8. Expectations in 3 Primary Areas

  9. David Lebowitz, Doctoral Student at HGSEKenny’s FEP intern, 2007-2008 Here we again listen to Kenny, this time describing his entering expectations forthe internship roles and goals. We also hear David, his intern, address the same question. Goals and Roles Kenny… Clip 3 David… Clip 2

  10. Goals and Roles • Please take a moment to fill out the top two dark grey sections at the top of your Expectations Handout. • When you meet with your partner, compare your answers. • Come to a shared understanding about how you will proceed in terms of the roles and goals for this internship.

  11. Communication, Time Management, Challenges… Site Operations David… Clip 7 Kenny… Clip 8

  12. Site Operations • Now fill out the light grey sections in the middle of your Expectations Worksheet (communication patterns, time management, and challenges to success). • Again, come to a shared understanding about how you will proceed in terms of these critical aspects of this internship.

  13. Final Course Product David discussing thefinal project…Clip 4 Kenny taking the opportunity to reflect… Clip 5

  14. Final Course Product • The intern should complete the white Learning Agreement section • When you are done, share your answers with your supervisor. • Brainstorm about this final product and how you can optimize your contributions to the site and learning from your internship.

  15. And finally, listen to Kenny’s few last comments. They are worthwhile.“Don’t wait until the end…” Clip 6Thank you for taking the time to invest in this internship and in each other.
