  4. In this lesson you will learn how to think about the choices an author made by asking “Why did the author chose to write it this way instead of that way?”

  5. Why is it important? Helps you determine the main idea. Helps you summarize a passage easily. What else? Why is it important to know, “What choices did the author make?”

  11. PERSUADE • Authors may write to try to get you to do something. • If so, the purpose is to persuade you. • They might try to get you to buy something, do something, or go somewhere. • The author tries to change our opinion on a topic by appealing to our emotions.
