  1. The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit
  2. TEXT: John 16:12-15 The ministry of the Holy Spirit in our lives is critical to being effective as Christians. There are two key aspects of the Holy Spirit’s ministry that make that effectiveness visible in our lives. They are:
  3. I. The Teaching of the Spirit A. The Lord Jesus made it clear that the Holy Spirit’s ministry would be even more effective than His own as a Teacher (John 16:7) B. The ministry of the Holy Spirit is that of “guiding” us into all the truth, which could not be done through ordinary “teaching” (John 16:12-13). It is the principle of readiness for learning.
  4. C. The Holy Spirit’s teaching ministry is, therefore, a continuation of the ministry of the Lord Jesus (John 16:13-14) D. It is as if the Master Teacher was here as a “personal tutor.”
  5. E. In the words translated teach, we gain an idea of the concept involved in the Biblical definition of teach 1. To “tell the words”- define meaning 2. To “catechize” – memorize the truth 3. To “indoctrinate” – tell the reason 4. To teach accuracy – used of training archers (2 Timothy 2:15) 5. To exercise – to use the truth regularly so that is it habitual
  6. II. The Leading of the Spirit A. This is a ministry of God’s grace (Gal 5:18) B. Therefore it is not trying to follow a set of rules (the Law), but being led and guided by a Helper (John 16:13) C. It is God’s will evidenced in your life (Phil 2:13) through His leading D. It comes from your submission and willingness to work for Him (Rom 12:1-2; Rom 6:16)
  7. “God leads, not by signs or outward things, but by the means of the willing and expectant heart and mind” (George Muller) “God is certainly able to speak loudly enough for the willing heart to hear”(Lewis Spery Chafer).
