  1. UCL SCHOOL OF LIFE AND MEDICAL SCIENCES SLMS CPD WorkshopTuesday 26th March 2013J Z Young Lecture Theatre, UCL Prof Sir John Tooke, UCL Vice Provost (Health)

  2. UCL strategic aim for education “UCL is committed to providing education of the highest academic quality, rigorous in its demands, distinctive in its character, imbued with UCL’s world-leading research and delivered by academic staff at the forefront of their field.” UCL Council White Paper 2011-2021

  3. UCL strategic aim for education An SLMS objective: • Commitment to career-long learning through delivery of a world leading CPD programme • Meeting the changing demands of the biomedical and health ecosystem by equipping the leaders of today and tomorrow • Reinforcing UCL’s thought leadership and academic reputation in life and biomedical science, and health care

  4. The wider context • The CPD market is changing: • Advances of e-learning technologies have led to market growth • Changes in UK medical regulation process - revalidation every 5yrs requires 50 hrs of CPD • Changes to the healthcare education landscape e.g. LETBs, MDECs. Increased demand from healthcare trainee education providers

  5. What we are doing… • CPD activity exists in disciplinary ‘pockets’ across SLMS. To fully realise the potential of this activity – and become ‘more than the sum of our parts’ – we will draw CPD delivery together as a coordinated programme • SLMS CPD will: • Build on SLMS’s existing courses in areas of research and educational strength • Leverage our institutional commitment to e-technology investment and innovation • Leverage UCL’s reputation as ‘London’s Global University’ Today’s event demonstrates this commitment!

  6. Institutional commitment to e-learning • To reinforce UCL’s reputation as a hub of excellence and innovation in teaching and learning, UCL has committed to a greater focus on e-learning technology and innovation • UCL’s ‘E-Learning Strategy: 2012-2015’ outlines this institutional commitment, emphasising seamless technology both online and in the physical learning. • Implementation of the strategy will be enabled by: • Departmental engagement and local champions, working with and supported by staff from E-Learning Environments (ELE) and the Centre for the Advancement of Learning and Teaching (CALT). • A new central support and governance structure for e-learning. • Integration with Vice Provost (Enterprise) strategic initiatives

  7. SLMS CPD Ambition Together we will… • Raise UCL’s profile as a global educational leader – leveraging e-learning delivery to make UCL’s life and biomedical expertise available to a global audience, and extend UCL’s identity as a provider of both excellent research and education. • Achieve an international CPD presence on a scale comparable with benchmark institutions such as Harvard, Stanford and MIT, and to realise the income-generation potential of UCL’s unique attributes.

  8. Thank you!
