  1. Movement of Particles in 4 States of Matter Solid Liquid Gas Plasma

  2. Solid • Density = • Since these atoms are so tightly packed, what is the only way they can move? HIGH

  3. Atoms are…. Vibrating!!! So their ENERGY is… LOW

  4. “What do you know about the SHAPE and VOLUME of a solid?” “The SHAPE and VOLUME are both DEFINITE, they do not change.”

  5. What is a CRYSTALLINE SOLID? A solid that is made up of crystals that are arranged in a regular, repeating pattern. Examples??? Fluorite crystals Snowflakes

  6. So what is an amorphous solid? The atoms inside of this solid are not arranged in a pattern, so they can not keep their shape permanently. Over a long period of time atoms in this solid slowly change their shape. Examples??? Wax Glass

  7. Glass Notice how much thicker the glass is

  8. Candle

  9. Liquid • What do you notice about how the atoms of a liquid are packed compared to a solid? The atoms in a liquid are more l o o s e l y packed.

  10. So Density = MEDIUM

  11. So how would the atoms of a liquid move? • The atoms are still stuck together, but they can move more freely since they have more space… So their ENERGY is… MEDIUM

  12. “The SHAPE depends on the container it is in, so it can CHANGE. The VOLUME is DEFINITE though, liquids always take up the same amount of space.” How would you describe the SHAPE and VOLUME of liquids?

  13. Viscosity is… What are some liquids with HIGH VISCOSITY? The resistance of a liquid to flow. Honey Ketchup

  14. What about some liquids that have a LOW VISCOSITY? Water Milk

  15. Gas • What do you notice about how The atoms of a liquid are packed compared to a solid? They barely touch each other at all….

  16. So Density = LOW

  17. How would you describe the energy of atoms inside of a gas? EXTREMELY HIGH!!

  18. “Gases take the shape of whatever space and volume they are contained in. So the SHAPE and VOLUME both CHANGE, neither are definite.” “So what about the SHAPE and VOLUME of gasses?”

  19. What phase of matter have we forgotten??? • PLASMA!!! A super-heated gas, found in space. On Earth plasma found in lightning and neon signs!
