  2. Setting • The setting is mostly outside in the wilderness. Its really hot during the day and cold at night. The time is about late October. • The author added this detail because she wanted to stress how harsh the conditions were for the main characters. • If this detail were to be omitted then the reader would not have know everything the main characters had to go through or how big of a risk it was for them.

  3. Characters

  4. Conflict • The main conflict is that Ian has to run away to find his dad after he punches his gym coach in the jaw and must get transferred to a bad-kids school. Now he is wanted by the police. This is a man vs. society.

  5. Summary of Plot • Ian McDermott has always had a problem with authority. He was always rebellious, until he punches his gym coach and breaks his jaw. Now Ian is on the run. He travels a great distance just to find his father. Will Ian ever get caught?

  6. Theme • Running away doesn’t solve anything. • Running away can be confusing and stressful. ‘’ now I'm lost and I don’t know what to do.” pg 23 • Running away can also be very disappointing. “ I cant believe he didn’t ask use to stay with him, I really thought he would.” pg 106 • Running away always leads to coming back. “ I walked all the way over there just to come back.” pg 209

  7. Point of View • The story is told in 1st person and is told by Ian. If this story were told by a different point of view, it wouldn’t be any good. I wouldn't have had to guess what would have happened next. It wouldn’t have been very suspenseful. And for the most part, I probably wouldn’t have read it.

  8. Symbolism • The skateboard ,for Ian, symbolizes his journey from running away. It was a way for him to forget his problems and just relax.

  9. Recommendation • This book was absolutely amazing! I could not put it down! It so original and captivating. If I could rate this book I would give it a perfect 10 out 10!
