  1. Antislavery Movement “…there was one of two things I had a right to, liberty or death: if I could not have one, I would have the other…

  2. What does the word Emancipation mean? • What was the goal of the abolitionist movement?

  3. Facts: Antebellum Slavery • By 1830 more than 2 million slaves lived in the south (they were worth over a billion dollars!) • By 1860 the total was closer to 4 million • 13% of America’s population • 75% of white southerners did not own slaves • Of those who did 88% owned less than 20 • Most slaves worked on plantations, small farms doing various work (90% lived in rural areas)

  4. 3 Early Federal Steps Against Slavery 1787 - Northwest Ordinance – Slavery banned in old Northeast (north of Ohio River & east of Mississippi River) 1808 – Congress prohibits further importation of slaves

  5. 1820– Missouri Compromise – no slaves in Louisiana Territory north of Missouri

  6. Expansion and Compromise of 1850 • north gets CA. as free state & abolition of slave trade in D.C • south gets New Mexico and Utah popular sovereignty & • stricter fugitive slave law • many in north are appalled by law and ignore it . South • grows resentful toward north

  7. Justifying Slavery • Biblical support • Western “tradition” (Aristotle had slaves) • “civilize” Africans • master/slave = family • better than northern “wage slaves”
