  1. Welcome to the UMD Auxiliary Services Virtual Tutorial! This virtual tutorial will give you, our new employee, an overview of the duties you have as a weekend janitor in the Kirby Student Center area.

  2. First and Foremost… When you come into work, the first thing you will want to do is clock in right at 3:00 P.M. Never clock in any time before then.

  3. Once you’ve clocked in… Grab a radio from the Info desk… Then meet up with the boss (shown on right) in the main office. He will go over what needs to be done for that particular day (and if there are any setups to do in the Rafters or ballroom).

  4. Setups If there are any setups to do, we generally will get those done first. This entails putting out and/or taking down chairs and tables, vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping.

  5. Once setups are done… We will disperse into groups to do hallways, bathrooms, the Dining Center, entryways, and garbage collection. In this tutorial we will go over how to do hallways.

  6. Hallways To do hallways, first you will need to go to a custodial closet and grab a broom, dustpan, mop and mop bucket. To fill the mop bucket, choose which chemical you want to use on the dispenser (generally all-purpose cleaner is sufficient for the hallways) and then turn on the water. The dispenser will mix the water and the chemicals for you.

  7. Once you have filled up the mop bucket, sweep and mop the 2nd floor and 3rd floor of the Kirby Student Center. Only mop the edges and corners of the floor where the auto scrubber would not be able to reach. Once you are done, a supervisor will run through the hallways with the auto scrubber to scrub the main areas. Hallways continued…

  8. Once all of those tasks are done… We group up once again to clean the bookstore together. We are in charge of taking out garbage, sweeping, and mopping.

  9. Break time! After the book store we take our dinner break up in the Dining Center. As a custodian we eat free of charge!

  10. Kitchen Once our break is finished we head downstairs to clean the kitchen. In the kitchen we are responsible for garbage, sweeping, mopping, and auto scrubbing (notice a pattern?)

  11. Sweeping and mopping It is very important that you sweep under everything and mop well. The cooks are very specific on how they want their kitchen to look like and if you don’t do a good job they might throw an old dinner roll at your head.

  12. The Dining Center Once the Dining Center has closed we prep it again for the next day. Once again we sweep, mop, auto scrub, take out garbage, and vacuum the seating area.

  13. After you are done with the Dining Center… You are done for the night! A few of us will take this time to run through the closing procedures, such as locking down the loading dock. As a new janitor, you will be trained in on those procedures later…so take this time to kick back and relax!

  14. Thanks for viewing the UMD Auxiliary Services Virtual Tutorial! Now get to work!
