Triaxial Mechanical Properties Testing of Oilwell Cements - Progress Report

This document provides an update on the progress of the Subcommittee on Well Cements (SC-10) in investigating and developing a standardized process for testing the mechanical behavior of oilwell cements under confinement. The report includes information on workgroup members, testing results, and discussions, as well as the plan for 2019.

  1. API Subcommittee on Well Cements (SC-10) Triaxial Mechanical Properties Testing of Oilwell Cements 2019 Winter Meeting Progress Report

  2. Today • Workgroup charge • Members • Testing results • Discussion • 2019 plan

  3. Workgroup Charge • Investigate and develop a technical report on the characterization of the mechanical behavior of cement under confinement • Workgroup deliverable • Submit a standardized process to be incorporated into the existing TR related to “Mechanical Behavior of Cement” by 2018 Winter Meeting

  4. WorkGroup Members

  5. August2018 Workgroup Activities • Participants and venues • OFITE conference room (6 members) • Conference call (6 members) • Key Activities • Team discussed testing methods used in Phase 1 • Identified that one main source of uncertainty may come from the calibration of the testing equipment • Use of standardized material to isolate testing related factors from cement sample related factors

  6. April 2018 Workgroup Activities • Key Activities • Two materials have been identified: Aluminum (E = 10 Mpsi; v=0.33) and Delrin (E < 0.5 Mpsi) • A third material has been looked for in the between, with no success • It has been proposed to serialize the calibration sample for further use: The objective could be to standardize the calibration of the testing equipment • Calibration samples would be needed for all plug size • Size received range from 1-in diameter to 6-in diameter • The lab have provided with the size of the plugs they can test

  7. August2018 Workgroup Activities • Key activities: • Second source of uncertainty could come from the parallelism and perpendicularity of the plugs • Third source of uncertainty could come from the sample saturation • It has been proposed to prepare a listing of the information to be provided on a test for comparison purposes.

  8. August2018 Workgroup Activities

  9. August2018 Workgroup Activities

  10. August2018 Workgroup Activities • Action Plan • Calibration samples • Ship calibration material samples • Perform triaxial tests on calibraton samples • Analyze and report • Parallelism and sample saturation investigation report • To be discussed during next meeting • Listing of the information to be provided on a test for comparison purposes • To be discussed during next meeting • To serve as a starting point for the report • Next meeting in February
