  1. HOW DO PLANETS COMPARE IN SIZE WITH THE SUN? To learn about the planets of our solar system. Objective:

  2. RESEARCH: listed in order from the sun: Mercury: Tiny, cratered, no atmosphere, no satellites, hot.

  3. Venus: Earth’s twin in size and mass, clouds that trap heat (hottest planet), volcanoes, no satellites.

  4. Mercury and Venus

  5. atmosphere of O2, 1 satellite (moon), water, moderate temps. Earth:

  6. Mars: 2 satellites, thin atmosphere (cold), red soil (iron), dormant volcanoes.

  7. ASTEROID BELT: separates inner and outer planets.

  8. Jupiter: 20+ satellites including the 4 Gallilean moons, Great Red Spot (storm), largest, cloud cover, dusty rings.

  9. Saturn: 20+ satellites, rings are 100 ft. thick, one moon (Triton) has N2-based atmosphere.

  10. Jupiter and Saturn

  11. Uranus: 15+ satellites, 90o tilt, rings.

  12. Neptune: 8 satellites, Great Dark Spot, rings.

  13. Uranus and Neptune

  14. Pluto: 1 satellites, frozen water and methane.

  15. THE SOLAR SYSTEM

  16. ACTIVITY: 1 mm = 10,000 miles! Sun: use compass, yellow paper 86.6 mm (8.7cm) Mercury: dot .31 mm Venus: dot .77 mm Earth dot .80 mm Mars dot .42 mm Jupiter green paper 8.9 mm Saturn red hole punch 7.15 mm Uranus pink paper 3.2 mm Neptune blue paper 3.1 mm Pluto dot .36 mm Diameter of Planet (mm)
