  1. The Bowl Judgments Revelation 15-16

  2. First Bowl: Sores upon those who have the Mark of the Beast and worshipped his image.

  3. Second Bowl: 1/3 of the Salt Water turned into blood.

  4. Third Bowl: 1/3 of the fresh waters turned to blood.

  5. Fourth Bowl: The sun’s temperature is increased to scorch people.

  6. Fifth Bowl: The fourth of five blackouts will occur. This blackout will affect the entire world except three Transjordan nations where light will still exist. • Similar to Exodus 10:21-23

  7. Application: • The Justice of God is one of the reasons we need to forgive. • Those who refuse God’s grace, will suffer exactly what they deserve. • When the amount of sin reaches fullness, then God executes judgment. (Rev. 18:5) • Revenge belongs ultimately belongs to God

  8. Many times people receive ironic judgment: • Pharaoh tried to drown baby boys, but his own army drowned. • Haman planned to hang Mordecai and exterminate the Jews, but he was hanged and his whole family exterminated. • King Saul refused to kill the all the Amalekites, so he was slain by an Amalekite.

  9. Therefore: One of the foundations for forgiveness is God will meet out justice perfectly but in His own timing.

  10. Distinguishing Between Two Kinds of Forgiveness Different Conditions • If he repents, forgive him -- Luke 17:3-4 • If you have anything against anyone, forgive -- Mark 11:25 With conflicting conditions ("if he repents" vs. " if you have anything against anyone")

  11. Different Individuals • The repentant offender and the offended -- Luke 17:3-4 • God and the offended believer -- Mark 11:25 Two humans are necessary to obey Luke 17:3-4--one who repents, and the other who grants forgiveness. Only one human (the offended believer) is necessary to obey Mark 11:25.

  12. Different Directions of Communications • Horizontally, between offended and offender -- Luke 17:3-4 • Vertically, between the offended believer and God -- Mark 11:25. • Luke 17:3-4 teaches a kind of forgiveness in which communications are horizontal--between the offended and the offender. • Mark 11:25 teaches a kind of forgiveness in which communications are vertically upward from the offended believer to God.

  13. Different Kinds of Communications • Verbal response to repentance -- Luke 17:3-4 • While praying, therefore by praying -- Mark 11:25 • Luke 17:3-4 speaks of a kind of forgiveness in which an offended person verbally grants forgiveness in response to verbal repentance. • Mark 11:25 teaches a kind of forgiveness in which a believer forgives while praying. Since the forgiveness of Mark 11:25 is to be done while praying, it follows that this kind of forgiveness is accomplished by praying.

  14. Different Actions Commanded • Forgive him (release the offender) -- Luke 17:3-4 • Forgive (release to God) -- Mark 11:25 • "If he repents, forgive him." (Luke 17:3). In contrast, correctly translated, Mark 11:25 says, • "forgive" not "forgive him.”

  15. Using Vertical and Horizontal Forgiveness: A Definition of Vertical Forgiveness The vertical forgiveness of Mark 11:25 is an act of the will--a verbal contract with God--in which the offended believer, in obedience to God, prays and releases the penalty of the offense to God. The Commitment of Vertical Forgiveness In the vertical forgiveness of Mark 11:25, the offended believer releases the penalty of the offense to God, promising God that he will do nothing out of malice or vindictiveness, but instead, he will treat the offender only in accordance with agape love--doing and saying only those things that are good for the offender.

  16. Biblical Resolution Unhampered by Vertical Forgiveness • Because vertical forgiveness (Mark 11:25) does not forgive the offender, but instead releases the penalty of the offense to God, using vertical forgiveness does not prevent the offended believer from rebuking the offender to bring him to repentance (Luke 17:3). And if rebuke isn't effective, the offended believer can take the matter to the church (Matt. 18:15-17). • Restitution Unhampered by Vertical Forgiveness • Because vertical forgiveness (Mark 11:25) does not forgive either the offense or the offender, but instead releases the penalty of the offense to God, using vertical forgiveness does not preclude requiring or receiving restitution.

  17. Horizontal Forgiveness • Horizontal forgiveness (Luke 17:3-4) restores fellowship between the offender and the offended to whatever extent is reasonable, appropriate, and circumspect. Horizontal forgiveness does not necessarily establish fellowship where none existed before the offense.
