A Global Navigation System from Europe • Galileo is a space-based navigation system designed to be ‘Interoperable’ with GPS • Constellation of Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) Satellites • like GPS • Three Orbital Planes • GPS has six • Operates in L-Band • like GPS • CDMA • like GPS • Multiple Services • More than GPS, some of which must be paid for

The Galileo Services • Open Service (OS) at E5a, E5b & L1-B • No fee for use • No guarantee of service • Similar to GPS L1 and L2C • Commercial Service (CS) at E6-B • Guaranteed level of service availability • Encrypted data (via fee) on all frequencies to deliver service • Safety-of-Life Service (SOL) at E5b and L1-B • No fee for use • High Integrity Levels for Civil Aircraft landing, etc(Like L5 GPS) • Public Regulated Service at L1-A and E6-A • Encrypted for Government use

The Signals (L1) • L1 Frequency - 1575.42MHz (B/W 40.92MHz) • Same frequency as GPS L1 • Three signals - A/B/C • L1-A carries part of Public Regulated Service (PRS) • Classified part, Equivalent to GPS M-Code • Encrypted signals and data • L1 B/C carries part of Open Service (OS) • Free for general use, equivalent of GPS C/A code • Only the B signal has data, the C aids overall signal tracking • Data includes some system Integrity Information • SAR RLM service

The Signals (E5) • E5 Frequencies (Centre 1191.795MHz B/W 92.07MHz) • E5a = 1176.45MHz (Includes GPS L5 frequency) • E5b = 1207.14MHz • Extra bandwidth aids multipath resolution • Two signals - a/b, each with two sub-elements • E5a-I carries part of Open Service • Free part, Nearest equivalent to GPS C/A Code • No Integrity information in its data • E5a-Q dataless pilot channel • E5b-I carries part of Open Service • Free part, designed particularly for aircraft use and Safety-of-Life (SOL Service) Applications • Integrity information as for L1-B • E5b-Q dataless pilot channel

The Signals (E6) • E6 Frequency - 1278.75MHz (B/W 40.92MHz) • Slightly above GPS L2 frequency • Three signals - A/B/C • E6-A carries part of Public Regulated Service • Classified part, Equivalent to GPS M-Code • Encrypted signals and data • E6 B/C carries Commercial Service (CS) • Chargeable, signals similar to GPS L5 • Optionally encrypted signals and data • Only the B signal has data, the C aids overall signal tracking • Higher accuracy and performance than OS with guarantees

Galileo Public Regulated Service (PRS) • Current status • Galileo will operate under civil control • Encrypted PRS signal for use by public safety organisations such as police, fire, customs agencies • EU has not approved use for military applications • PRS summary • Two signals: L1-A and E6-A • Encrypted for controlled access • L1-A modulation: BOC(15,2.5)cos • E6-A modulation: BOC(10,5)cos • G/Nav data messages

Spirent Test Solution for Galileo PRS • Status: • Under development for official IOV contracts • Architecture: • FPGA in generator provides all COMSEC and NAVSEC functions • SimGEN provides unencrypted G/Nav data through GUI • Availability: • SimPRS is initial product designator • Subject to availability controls • Galileo Programme Security Instruction (PSI) • Please speak to us for further information

GLONASS Constellation • Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) • Operated by Russian Space Forces • 12 operational satellites (12-2006) • Planned fully operational by 2008 (18 satellites) • 24 satellites by 2010 in 3 orbital planes • Spirent GLONASS Simulator • L1 available today: STR4780 • L2 planned: delivery from mid-2008

Frequencies • The L1 signal has a frequency division multiple access (FDMA) scheme • L1 = 1602 MHz + 0.5625n MHz, where n is the channel number (n = -7 to +13) • The L2 signal also has a frequency division multiple access (FDMA) scheme • L2 = 1246 MHZ + 0.4375m MHz, where m is the channel number(m = -7 to +13) • Only using channels 1-12 at the moment (as of 2005)

Signal Types • GLONASS satellites transmit two types of signals • Standard precision (SP) for civil users worldwide • High precision (HP) for restricted use (MoD authorised) • They are both transmitted on both frequencies • The standard accuracy signal has a clock rate of 0.511 MHz • The high accuracy signal has a clock rate of 5.11 MHz • Nav data message transmitted at 50 bps • Repeating superframes of 2.5mins duration containing 5 frames • Frame lasts 30s containing 15 strings -> string lasts 2s
