  1. Avoiding Telemarketing Mistakes that can Cost your Business For many prospects, telemarketers are people who interrupt their daily activities for selling prod- ucts or services that they neither want or need. Telemarketing doesn’t enjoy a good reputation as a marketing method because of some mistakes that telemarketers make. One of the most common telemarketing mistakes is failing to improvise and depending entirely on scripting. If telemarketers are talking to a diversified set of customers, then improvisation is very important. This is because people can be very unpredictable. Even though it helps to keep a set of prepared responses ready to handle certainsituations, telemarketers should be ready to give a personal touch to the responses, as and when required. If they only stick to the script, they will fail to establish a rapport with the prospect. At times, telemarketers fail to identify the identity of the person who has answered the call and get into the sales pitch right away. If they don’t speak to the right person on the phone, then they will just be wasting their time. They need to do verification in order to ensure security and safety, espe- cially when they have to handle the personal information of customers. If a telemarketing agency fails to know enough about the prospects, then the purpose of telemar- keting won’t be fulfilled. It is very important to do some research on target customers in order to connect with them easily. For instance, noticing its the prospect’s birthday will matter a lot when a call is being made. If there is no research, it will become difficult for telemarketers to relate the product or services to the needs of the prospects. A customer can be satisfied only when the tele- marketing expert knows the relevance between the customer’s needs and the products or services that are being marketed. Talking too much and making the offer too soon are two more common mistakes that telemarket- ers should avoid. Listening to the customers is very important. If the telemarketer is doing all the talking and not listening to the queries of the customer, then it will leave a bad impression on the prospect. It is necessary to listen to the prospects as well in order to show them that you are con- cerned about their time and queries. At times, telemarketers make the offer too soon and fail to es- tablish value and trust in a hurry. Instead, they should invest some time in building a rapport and then make the offer. If you are also a business owner planning to hire a telemarketing agency, then make sure that you are doing some research in order to choose the right one. There are several agencies in the mar- ket and not all can be trusted. It is best to ask for recommendations or shortlist and compare few reputed names before making a decision. Telemarketing is a very effective marketing method but if you are not choosing the right team of telemarketers, then it will pose problems for you, so choose wisely.
