PLANTATIONS AND SLAVERY JOURNAL QUESTION Learning goals: • Explain the effect of the cotton gin on slavery in the South. • Describe the daily life and culture of African Americans in the South in the mid-1800s. • Journal Prompt:If you had escaped from slavery, would you go back to help people whom you don’t know? What about friends or family? Explain your answer.

  2. PLANTATIONS AND SLAVERY • 1. The cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney. He also invented interchangeable parts for guns.

  3. PLANTATIONS AND SLAVERY Farmers in the South grew more cotton and stopped growing other crops and raising as many animals • 2. The cotton gin changed the South by encouraging Southerners to grow more cotton.
