  2. Rosa Parks: Ideas for a Change • In December of 1943 Rosa Parks joined the NAACP as the Chapter Secretary. • Constantly worked with Chapter President Edgar Daniel Nixon which shaped her ideas.

  3. Rosa Parks: I was TIRED • At one point, during the ride in the bus, a white man didn’t had a seat so they decided to take the first row of the “Colored” section to add it to the “White” section. The other three obeyed, Rosa Parks did not. In effect two police officers placed Parks in custody.

  4. This was not the first time • Before Rosas Parks, there were a number of women who refused to give up their seats within the same bus system • In fact, Claudette Colvin, at age 15, was the first to really challenge the law • 9 months before Rosa Parks did the very same thing

  5. An Action that Revolutionized the Civil Rights Movement • Her action was incredibly successful because it ignited the Montgomery Bus Boycott. • E.D. Nixon convinced Parks and her family that she was the key to test the validity of segregation laws. • The idea of boycotting turned out to be a bigger hit than expected • They took advantaged of the situation and created the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) • Which gave entranceto aleader of the African American Civil Rights Movement, MIA’s President Martin Luther King Jr.
