  1. THE MANAGEMENT PROCESS Bridging the gap between just thinking about your goals and making them happen. The “Road Map” to achieving your short-term or long-term goals! 4 STEPS…

  2. STEP 1: PLANNING • Identify Goals • What do you want to accomplish? • Establish Priorities • What matters most? • Making the best of your time and resources • Create a Task List (to do list) • Make a list of all the steps you will need to complete • Contingency plan: alternative course of action that can help you overcome potential obstacles.

  3. STEP 2: ORGANIZING • Create a Schedule • How much time will you need to perform each task on your list? • Sequence of events • Gather Your Resources • Identify resources needed • Are resources available?

  4. STEP 3: IMPLEMENTING • Carry Out Your Plan • Action • Use resources and follow task list according to your schedule • Be prepared to make adjustments as needed (contingency plan)

  5. STEP 4: EVALUATING • Evaluate your Results • Did you accomplish your goals? • Positives and negatives • Evaluate the Process • Add or omit • Evaluating helps you learn from your experiences and allows for better success in the future.

  6. APPLY • Putting the Management Process Together • In groups of FOUR • You must use the steps of the Management process to plan a school dance. • How would you go about planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating the dance?

  7. MAKING DECISIONS Should reflect your character and be based on your goals.

  8. ACTIVITY • How many decisions do you think you make in a day? • What decisions you have made so far today.

  9. WAYS TO MAKE DECISIONS • Habit • Common Sense • Intuition • Past Experience • Parental Guidance/Religious Training • Decision-Making Process • WHICH IS USED MOST OFTEN?

  10. ACTIVITY • You use different methods to make decisions every day of your life. • Ways to Make a Decision Worksheet

  11. THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESS • Identify the decision to be made • Gather and examineinformation • Identify possible alternatives/choices • Evaluate the consequences of each alternative (Pro & Con list) • Choose the best alternative and act on it • Evaluate the results

  12. 1. IDENTIFY THE DECISION TO BE MADE • Focus on the issue/decision to be made • Clear your mind from distractions • State the decision verbally or write it down • Example: To attend a four year university or two year college after I graduate from HS?

  13. 2. GATHER AND EXAMINE INFORMATION • Identify sources of information (resources) to help you • School counselor, parents, religious leader, friends • Internet/websites • College visits • Asking for help is not a sign of weakness

  14. 3. IDENTIFY POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVES • What are your options/choices to meet your goals, find a solution, or address a problem? • Use information/resources you have to help select possible alternatives/choices • Write down the alternatives • MSU • KVCC • WMU

  15. 4. EVALUATE THE CONSEQUENCES OF EACH ALTERNATIVE • Each alternative may pose certain consequences for you or for others • Make a pro and con list • Review the consequences and evaluate them carefully

  16. 5. CHOOSE THE BEST ALTERNATIVE AND ACT ON IT • Complete after all alternatives have been evaluated • Pros outweigh the cons? • Put your plan in action • Use management skills • All the thoughtful consideration you put into the decision may be wasted if you fail to act

  17. 6. EVALUATE THE RESULTS • You can now see the results of your decision • How it affected you and others/you must accept responsibility for and consequences • + consequences = satisfaction • - consequences = learn from your mistakes

  18. REMEMBER… Making no decision is making a decision. It is deciding not to act. It is deciding to accept whatever happens or whatever other people decide for you. It may be a sensible choice, or it may mean giving up a chance to manage your own life.

  19. CASE STUDY: Alan’s Decision • Sam and Alan were high school friends. Sam wanted a medical career so he enrolled in a state university. Alan wanted to work with sports cars, hoping to eventually set up his own shop. Alan would like to go with his best friend to the university. He knows they’d have a lot of fun together. Alan’s parents said he could choose any college or training program he wanted. His high school grades were above average. What should Alan do? • Use the 6 steps of the Decision Making Process

  20. APPLY • Think of a decision YOU must make. • Follow the steps in the decision-making process to determine the best alternative/choice. • Using the Decision-Making Process Worksheet
