  6. Merit Based Scholarships • Colleges review the ACT scores, GPA, and Transcripts. Students meeting requirements are granted Merit scholarships. • President Leadership (These are the words to look for when looking for scholarships.) • Distinguished Scholars • Excellence Award • Merit Award • Alumni • Excellence It is important to apply before the deadline!

Automatic Merit Based Scholarships Bright Flight Scholarship Eligibility: • Students earning a required composite score on the ACT, or the SAT, and are in the top 3 percent of all Missouri Students taking those tests. • Eligible students receive an approval letter from MDHE The state will determine the amount the student’s receives and funds will be sent to the attending college. The amount of the award is determined in July. This scholarship is renewable each semester if the student meets qualifications.

  10. Missouri A+ Program • A+ Helps to pay tuition to a two year college, technical school, or trade school in the state of Missouri. Grants and Loans Free Application for Federal Student Aid www.fafsa.ed.gov • Students may earn an A+scholarship from a four year University. • (The PCHS A+ website lists the four year colleges & Universities offering a scholarship for A+ eligible students)

  12. PCHS Scholarship application process Seniors are presented with scholarship information: • Counselor is in the classroom early in the fall. • School announcements. • Email and/or text. • Scholarship board. • PCHS website under Counselor/Scholarship.

  15. Searching for scholarships • Start Searching for Scholarships ASAP: • Apply for as many scholarships as possible. • Beware of scholarship scams. You should not pay for a scholarship application. • Ask your Employer, Elks, Masonic Lodge, Odd Fellows, Church.

  16. When submitting an Application for a Scholarship • Follow the guidelines for submission that the scholarship provider has given you. Pay attention to detail. • Type the scholarship application, unless otherwise stated. • Always use a black pen for signatures, never a pencil! • Proofread and ask someone to proofread the application. • Deadlines are there for a reason, submit on time. Scholarships are gifts. Free money!

Simplify Scholarship Application • Avoid waiting until the last minute. • Create a calendar of deadlines and check regularly. • Draft a Vitae: list ACT or SAT score, GPA, extracurricular activities, • work information, volunteer work, awards, leadership and/or offices held. • Make a list of names of people who could write recommendation letters for you. • Store your scholarship information & essays on your computer and keep a back up copy on a flash drive.

  18. The Letter of Recommendation • Ask the appropriate person to write your letter of recommendation. • Be Punctual & Considerate!Don’t wait until the last day. Two weeks is best. • All but write it for them…give your recommender enough material so that it will be quick and easy for them to oblige. • Request the Letter to be printed on a Letterhead. • Provide stamps and envelopes. • Say thank you.

Writing essays • Address the essay question in a clear and articulate manner. • *Present your goal, the college you plan to attend, the program of study you are seeking, your plans after college. • *Identify community service activities. What was special about the community service activity. How did you grow as a person by participating in the community service. • Have someone proofread your essay. • Make sure it is written in a neat, clear, and understandable form.

Senior scholarship awards • Senior Scholarship Awards Night, May 14 @ 7:00 pm in the Wilson auditorium. • Scholarship Award Forms will be released in April and due to my office the first week of May. This form allows the counseling office to list the student’s name and scholarship award on the program. Graduation is May 17 @ 7:00 pm

  21. When you receive the Scholarship award Send a hand-written note thanking the provider for the scholarship money.
