  3. For the NHS's sake, stop blaming GPs. We're under immense pressure too. The out-of-hours demands on GPs are increasing while resources are shrinking. Let's take the politics out of the NHS Sara Khan Wednesday 24 July 2013

Please try to book an appointment in advance or on the day.

  10. What you can expect from US • A teaching programme that will help you prepare for your exams and to be a fully fledged GP • Placements to help you do the same • Liaison with your clinical and educational supervisors • Help if you run into problems • Liaise with you using educators notes

What we ask of YOU Check the timetable online and turn up on time to teaching sessions Interact with us, your speakers and the rest of the group Let us know if you won’t be here or will be late (sickness, annual and study leave or if you can’t leave your placement) Do not arrange appointments during VTS time unless it is urgent (eg leg hanging off) Engage with your e-portfolio and your exams Behave professionally in your hospital and GP jobs. Aim to get the most from each one. Support your fellow STs Let us know if you are experiencing problems

Inductions You should all have been invited to the hospital induction program organised here at the RBH You will also have been invited to the induction at the Kassam stadium for new GP trainees on the 2nd September You should have received an email from us detailing your rotations Those doing GP posts should have been invited to attend a session with the TVPCA to join the medical performers list and get your CRB checks done in preparation for your GP jobs Has anyone missed out???

Annual leave/study leave • Arrange well in advance • Ensure your practice manager/hospital supervisor are aware • Complete annual leave/study leave forms for your period in training • Apply for study leave funding through Sue Matthews (hospital) direct to deanery(GP) using forms on our website • (trainees – downloadable forms)

  14. Out of hours induction Those of you doing general practice over the next 12 months need to attend an introductory session at Westcall or with Oxford depending on your practice location. Details will be sent to you shortly

OOH continued • Your educational supervisor needs to give you traffic light status (red to start with) • You need to build up 36 hours of experience over your 6 months GP ST1/ or ST2 post • Each session in out of hours needs 1) a completed OOH form (on website) signed by your supervisor for the session and stating how many hours it covered 2) an e-portfolio learning log entry in which you show in the first line how many hours you have completed in that session

OOH continued…. • You need to book the sessions early to avoid disappointment and inform your practice manager/trainer promptly so that they can modify your timetable. • If you work an evening shift on a weekday you will need to start late the next morning to avoid breaching the WTD. As you are paid for OOH shifts within your contract you are responsible to make up this time at another point in your training e.g. doing an extended hour surgery.

  17. MDU/MPS subscription in GP Ensure it is up to date Your practice and the TVPCA will require evidence that you are fully paid up Your subscription can be reclaimed through the TVPCA whilst you are in General practice-send a copy of your indemnity schedule to the TVPCA

  18. Inform your car insurer! It is often forgotten, but home visits count as business use.

  19. Mileage • Claim your mileage when in general practice- The form is on the VTS website 2 pages, complete monthly and send to TVPCA • You can claim up to 20miles home and back + visits (only on days you actually do a visit) you can also claim for travel to and from courses • You can’t claim for OOH!

  20. Study Leave • £300 per 6 months in GP from deanery • £300 per 6 months in hospital from RBH • 10 days per 6 months + VTS for FT trainee • Both forms are on website • Apply IN ADVANCE

  21. Go to Oxford deanery website… www.oxforddeanery.nhs.uk The site will tell you : • which deanery run courses are available • how to apply for them (2 months in advance, form to be signed by you, your trainer, us) • how to apply for the funding

  22. Educational Reps • 1 or 2 reps • Preferably have an interest in education/teaching but not absolutely necessary • Apply in email – closing date TBC

  23. What you get out of it • Experience of an educational role • Ability to influence the scheme for your peers and for those following on • Development of new ideas and initiatives • Impressive addition to your CV
