  1. Best Sober living in NYC Best Sober living in NYC - People often ask us at City Recovery what the “best” sober living option in New York City looks like. To find the best sober living requires looking at many factors. Diagnosis, Aftercare Plans, Level of Support and Family Dynamics are just a few. DIAGNOSIS: Most people struggling with an addiction issue also have a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis. That means there is an underlying mental health diagnosis that is a key factor in driving their addiction behaviors.

  2. Things like Trauma, PTSD, Schizoaffective disorders, Bi-polar 1 and 2 are all contributing factors if you are working on making the changes necessary to lead a healthy, happy life. Working with a Sober Living and AfterCare provider that also understands these issues is key. You may have a complicated list of medications or need someone helping you navigate new coping mechanisms and having a staff trained to manage these issues and experience working with mental health diagnosis is key. AFTER CARE PLANS: Are you going back to school or getting a new job or just attending IOP and focusing on your recovery? Whatever your plans are post-inpatient rehab you’ll need a staff that has the bandwidth to help you on all fronts. The first year of recovery is the most daunting and the most important year-you’re changing everything.

  3. Make sure your Sober Living and Aftercare team have at least 5 years of sobriety, and have examples of clients they’ve helped in the past either get job placements or return to school or any of the important milestones you’re looking to hit while you’re in the safety of a Sober living. LEVEL OF SUPPORT: Some people have the ability to change their life with a minimum stay of 28 days while some people need longer to address difficult addiction behaviors. If you feel shaky and doubt whether you can sustain sobriety, make sure your Sober Living has the staff to support you with everything from one-on-one coaching care to full-time companion services. Having a trained staff member handling medications and certified counseling staff are always a plus.

  4. Many staff at sober livings have their hearts in the right place but may not have the years of training or any level of continuing formal education to truly help with those that need more. Make sure you choose a place that has had 5 years or more of working in the industry and be sure to ask how they deal with relapses. All of this can affect your progress and your focus while you’re working on your sobriety. AFMILY DYNAMICS: Dealing with family members is always difficult and can be a major contributing factor to your mental well-being and sobriety. Different after care providers offer different levels of service in dealing with family members. Some clients have wives, husbands, children they are away from and others have an actively using or alcoholic parent at home that can be difficult to navigate.

  5. Having a Family Support Specialist that works directly with family members and gives you the ability to detach from family issues while you focus yourself is key. Someone with experience in their own lives and in their own family with a nighter level of education or certification is something to look for if you have a difficult time with your family. Let your aftercare provider help you in as many ways as possible focus on yourself and your recovery.
