  2. Homeless Children • Are two times likely to have learning disabilities • Are three times likely to have emotional and behavioral problems • Are four times more likely to have developmental delays • Are eight times more likely to be asked to repeat a grade

  3. Homelessness Is Happening In Our Community Greenville School District: 163 homeless out of 3534 in 2011 120 homeless children in 2013 (Mid-Michigan District Health Department, 2011) (VanHouten, 2013)

  4. Mission A safe haven for young school age children in crisis who have been turned out of their homes. Those that have found themselves homeless, abused or in crisis. To provide a home based communication center to educate, support, council, and promote life skills.

  5. Philosophy To provide the homeless students with the opportunity to receive free educational opportunities such as computer availability, access to school supplies, and the support of mentors and tutors. Assisting students in achieving their full academic potential will increase the graduation rate among homeless children. Providing students with emotional support and enhanced life skills will increase their future successes.

  6. Goal • Establish a center for homeless school age children that will provide increased educational opportunities and resources • Outcome Objective: • Secure established facility by September 2014 • Process Objective: • Secure a support organization • Fundraising • Grants • Donations

Goal • Increase the graduation rate of homeless school children by 10% within the first year of operation • Outcome Objective: • Increase semester grades by one letter per semester • Maintain a 2.0 (C) Grade Point Average (GPA) or better • Process Objective: • Students will provide copies of their report cards • Provide educational opportunities such as computers, printers, tutors, peer study groups, and the necessary supplies needed to succeed

Goal • Establish supportive and collaborated resources • Outcome Objectives: • Secure volunteer staff by August 2014 • Secure high school and college collaboration for tutoring and mentoring by August 2014 • Process Objectives: • Advertise community service hours in local media • Contact Greenville school board of education for approval and promotion • Contact Montcalm Community College, Grand Valley State University, Michigan State University, Ferris State University, Lansing Community College, and Grand Rapids Community College’s Dean of Education for approval and promotion

Volunteer Job Description • Requirements • Active license's for position applied for as required by law • Willingness to help the underserved • Criminal background check • Must be dependable and supportive • Basic office skills preferred • Duties • Provide reassurance to students • Provide mentorship • Provide tutoring to those in need • Provide students with necessary life skills • Provide students with educational resources that will enable them to succeed in their education • Provide employment skills • Volunteer Position

Start Up • Offsetting Costs • Project nurses will submit grant proposal to federal government to cover start up costs. • Donations will be solicited from Walmart, Kmart, Meijer, Sears, Local Churches • Local charitable organization such as Good Will, Lean on Me, and GLC hope ministries will be asked for donations toward furniture needs • Project nurses will seek discounted/donated advertising in the local paper for the first 30 days. • Hours of Operation • Monday-Friday 3:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. • Saturday 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
