How can KMC & High Technology Care be Compatible? • Try to convince all professionals in your NICU of the positive effects of the KMC method, even in high technology NICU environment • Reach an interdisciplinary agreement about practical, evidence based guidelines that ensure safe & consistent care

Family Centered Care • Flexible visiting hours • Provide facilities & services to meet parental special needs; especially mother • Communication, Shared information • Encourage parents to participate in learning to care for their baby • Family support services • Family consultant • Provide breastfeeding support and care

Regarding KMC; Tell the Mother • You are the best person to initiate & continue with individualized care, reciprocal care in NICU • The first step in the process reciprocity is understanding your baby’s messages • Trying to eliminate as fully as possible any activity that produce distress • The second step is to shape the environment within NICU • Least disruptive • The most comforting to your infant; even in your absence

  6. Modify the Environment & Contribute to Individualized Care in NICU • Assess the light in the environment • Assess the noise level • Assess the layout of the intensive care unit • Assess the nap time • Establish day-night cycling • Positioning

  7. Preparing for KMC • Clear guideline • Teaching • Medical team • Parents

  8. Equipment • Comfortable chair • Infant hat for small babies • Warm blankets • Privacy screen

  9. Exempt Patients for KMC • Infants who are not medically stable or who have had an acute or sudden deterioration in condition within the past 24 hours • Infants with a chest tube and/or intracardiac line (RA or LA)
