The Program • Three week course during the January Intersession including a two week stay in Rome: “The Eternal City” • One course = three credits, either ITAL 216/316 Aspects of Italian Culture or HIST 376 History of the City of Rome • Course may be applied towards an Italian Minor; a History Major or Minor; or an International Studies Minor • Visits to churches, monuments, museums, and ancient ruins • Social and cultural activities including Italian language classes, music, films, and cooking lessons • Opportunity to experience Italian culture first-hand • Open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors in good academic standing • No previous knowledge of Italian required • Non-Mount Saint Vincent students are also welcome to apply • A stay with an Italian host family or shared student apartment
Program Expenses • $800 Program Fee + $990 Tuition + Airfare • Program fee includes housing with an Italian family/shared student apartment, classroom fees and materials, Italian language classes, guided tours in Rome, cooking lessons, and some meals. • Tuition $330 per credit x 3 = $990. • Airfare $600 - $800. Fares fluctuate: book early, be flexible in terms of dates and stopovers, and compare online websites and travel agents, see in particular STA Travel which offers special student rates. • Current rate of exchange from Euro to Dollar is: 1 Euro=$1.30.
Who is Eligible • Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors • A minimum 2.8 GPA and Good Academic Standing • Preference given to Italian Minors, History Majors/ Minors and International Studies Minors • All are welcome to apply and attend information sessions
Italy and the Italian Program • Italian 216/316: Aspects of Italian Culture: This course will explore topics in the art, culture, history, and society of Italy, through a program of lectures and tours to key cultural sites within Rome, Italy. Students will be introduced to the art and history of Italy from Ancient Rome to the present. From the ancient ruins of Coliseum and the Roman Forum to sublime works of Renaissance and Baroque artists, the course will trace the major periods of Italy’s cultural heritage. Contemporary social and political issues will also be explored through additional cultural activities, to provide students with a better understanding of Italy today. There is an Italian language component to the course and all oral and written assignments and exams must be completed in Italian. • Prerequisite at least one year of Italian. This course may be applied towards a Minor in Italian or International Studies
Italy and the History Program • HIST 376 Topics: History of the City of Rome: The course will trace the history of the city of Rome from its ancient origins to the present, situating Rome in the broader context of the development European civilization and the creation of modern Italy. The majority of lectures will be conducted on-site at key museums, monuments, and churches within the city of Rome. Major themes covered will include: the Roman Empire and early Christianity, Papal Rome, Renaissance and Baroque culture, the unification of Italy, Rome under the Fascist dictatorship, and Rome today as a major European capital city. • Fulfills a pre-modern or European course requirement (3 credits). • May be applied towards an International Studies Minor
