  1. NCHA ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES

  2. ENERGY AIMS • NCHA has two major energy related aims • to reduce carbon emissions • to provide warm, affordable homes • They aim to do this through the three strategies • Environmental • Energy • Affordable Warmth

  3. MISSION STATEMENT To ensure our tenants have a home they can afford to keep warm to an acceptable comfort standard and that the environment of the home contributes to the good health of its occupants.

  4. Orchard Street • An innovative scheme to install a wood fuelled boiler system at a registered care home in Hucknall, • NCHA has been awarded a grant from the DTI Clear Skies programme to help fund the scheme ; this will be one of the first social housing installations in an urban area. • The installation of this technology will have a very low direct impact on the service users. There is, at Orchard Street a strong environmental ethos ,a biomass heating system is seen as being in keeping with those goals.

  5. SOLUTION • A biomass heating system was chosen as this is a heating system which can be run on wood pellets which are made from compressed wood particles such as sawdust. • These pellets will be supplied locally in Nottinghamshire and so the project will help with the local economy and help to sustain local woodlands

  6. Hartington Street • Photovoltaic (PV) tiles at the development of 13 three-storey family houses in a refurbished railway warehouse in the centre of Loughborough. • Advantages for NCHA tenants are • PVs can contribute to providing carbon free electricity • Electricity produced by the PV installation is generally consumed by tenants directly, thereby reducing electricity bills. • Fulfilling obligations under NCHA’s Affordable Warmth Strategy towards tenants.

  7. GREEN APPLE AWARD Three aspects of industrial heritage. • The Grand Union Canal this scheme extends the towpath and encourages its use by positioning a new block of shared ownership apartments up to the back edge of the path where patios and balconies overlook the towpath The towpath now terminates into a public open space with children’s play equipment.

  8. The Great Central Railway • The railway runs along the eastern boundary of the site and is visually separated from the site by an existing brick wall. The scheme aims to encourage the sustainability of the railway by designing new buildings so that their impact does not hinder any potential development of the railway terminus. • The Hex Warehouse • This building dates from the 1920’s and was linked to the hosiery industry in the area. As part of the redevelopment of the area it was agreed that the building should be retained and converted into affordable family housing.
