  6. 1523-24 - Spanish adventurer Pedro de Alvarado defeats the indigenous Maya and turns Guatemala into a Spanish colony. De Alvarado was in the original expedition of Hernan Cortés to Mexico.

  7. 1821 - Guatemala becomes independent and joins the Mexican empire the following year. 1823 - Guatemala becomes part of the United Provinces of Central America, which also include Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.

  8. Septiembre 16, 1830 - General Francisco Morazán becomes President of Central American Federation. 1839 - Guatemala becomes fully independent after the disintegration of the Central American Federation. Morazán moves onto to Costa Rica, where he dies in San José in 1842.

  9. 1839 - Guatemala becomes fully independent. 1859 – Guatemala signs Peace treaty recognizing British Sovereignty over Belize. 1844-65 - Guatemala ruled by conservative dictator Rafael Carrera during most of this time period.

  10. 1873-85 - Guatemala ruled by liberal President Justo Rufino Barrios, who modernises the country, develops the army and introduces coffee growing. Expelled the Jesuits, confiscated church property; wanted to restore the CAF.

  11. 1901- United Fruit arrives in Guatemala. 1904 - Guatemalan dictator Manuel Estrada Cabrera grants United Fruit a ninety-nine year concession to construct and maintain the country's main rail line from Guatemala City to Puerto Barrios.

  12. 1944 - Juan Jose Arevalo becomes president following the overthrow of Ubico and introduces social-democratic reforms, including setting up a social security system and redistributing land to landless peasants. 1951 - Colonel Jacobo Arbenz Guzman becomes president, continuing Arevalo's reforms. 1954 - Land reform stops with the accession to power of Colonel Carlos Castillo in a coup backed by the US and prompted by Arbenz's nationalization of plantations of the United Fruit Company.

  13. Juan José Arévalo Elected President in 1945 with 85% of the vote. Ends 14 years in exile in Argentina. Ends military rule. Initiates land reform. Opposed Communism. Not supported by upper-class Guatemalan society.

  14. Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán:1950 – 1954 Continued with agrarian reform. Built a port to compete with UF. Built roads to compete with UF. Overthrown by Carlos Castillo Armas backed by the CIA.
