  1. Advanced Tools for Creating, Updating and Using Custom File Properties Alin Vargatu, Senior Applications Engineer Javelin Technologies

  2. Javelin Technologies Inc. History • In business since June 1997 • Javelin has over 45 employees who support over 2,100 companies in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces plus 50 educational institutions. • Over 2,500 customers trained in our training classes

  3. Agenda • Instead of Introduction • Six great reasons for using Custom File Properties • Where can the Custom Properties be created or modified? Short answer: ANYWHERE!

  4. Instead of Introduction… ? … let me ask you a question…

  5. What is your NUMBER 1 reason for getting CERTIFIED? ?

  6. Bragging Rights at SolidWorks World 

  7. What are Custom File Properties? Asimplisticsimple definition: “Custom properties are text values used to populate annotations, BOM's (Bill of Materials), and drawing templates in SolidWorks. They should be added to your parts and assemblies so that, when a drawing is created, the Title Block, BOM and Notes are automatically filled in with the related model information.”

  8. What are Custom File Properties? An even simpler definition: “Custom properties are metadata. Same type of information that you find in your iTunes library attached to your songs.”

  9. Six Great Reasons for using Custom File Properties 1. Automatically create parametric Bill of Materials

  10. Six Great Reasons for using Custom File Properties 2. Automatically populate parametric Title Blocks

  11. Six Great Reasons for using Custom File Properties 3. Select your assembly components using custom properties

  12. Six Great Reasons for using Custom File Properties 4. Isolate your assembly components using custom properties

  13. Six Great Reasons for using Custom File Properties 5. Custom Properties as Assembly Visualization Criteria

  14. Six Great Reasons for using Custom File Properties 6. Drive your model dimensions using the Custom Properties Tab

  15. Where can the Custom Properties be created or modified? • Inside part, assembly or drawing files, using the old tried, tested and true approach – Filemenu/ Properties Main disadvantage: Have to repeat this workflow for each and every model. Cannot add properties in bulk.

  16. Good to know - Warning! “ If configuration specific properties are created, they take precedence over custom properties with the same name!”

  17. Where can the Custom Properties be created or modified? 2. Inside part, assembly or drawing files, using Custom Properties Tabs

  18. Good to know - Time saver! “Using the Custom Properties Tab you can apply properties in bulk.”

  19. Good to know - Time Saver! “You can use Advance Selection to select all components of the same type: parts or assemblies

  20. Good to know - Cool Stuff! “You can drive model’s dimensions using the Custom Properties Tab

  21. Good to know - Cool stuff “You can create your own Custom Properties Tabs using the Property Tab Builder.”

  22. Good to know - Cool stuff “Take advantage of the WYSIWYG interface of Property Tab Builder.”

  23. Good to know - Team work! “To share the customized tab, store it on a network drive that is accessible by all SolidWorks users on the design team. Then have the users set their file location for Custom Properties Files to that location.”

  24. Where can the Custom Properties be created or modified? 3. Using Design Tables in part or assembly files • Syntax: $PRP@Property

  25. Where can the Custom Properties be created or modified? 4. Using Modify Configuration Dialog Box in part or assembly files • RMB on a component, select Configure Component and press Hide/Show Custom Properties

  26. Good to know - Time saver! “Use the <All Parameters> button to get an instant overview of all the configuration specific properties diferences.”

  27. Where can the Custom Properties be created or modified? 5. Using the Bill of Material in assembly or drawing files. • Editing a BOM table cell will input or update the corresponding property at component level.

  28. Good to know - Warning! “When editing a BOM cell, make sure you keep the parametric link to the component property.”

  29. Good to know - Cool stuff! “You can include different properties into one BOM column.”

  30. Good to know - Cool stuff! “You can make decisions inside BOMs using “IF / THEN” statements.” • Example: IF(`Type`="Purchased";`Vendor`;"Manufactured")

  31. Where can the Custom Properties be created or modified? 6. Using the Title Block in drawing files. • By editing the title block fields, the corresponding properties will be updated in the model

  32. Where can the Custom Properties be created or modified? 7. Using the SolidWorks Explorer

  33. Good to know - Warning! “You cannot edit configuration specific properties using SolidWorks Explorer.”

  34. Good to know - Time Saver! “People that do not have SolidWorks installed on their machines can use the SolidWorks Explorer to add or edit custom properties.” Note: They need a license of Workgroup PDM Contributor in order to be able to use SolidWorks Explorer on a machine without SolidWorks.

  35. Where can the Custom Properties be created or modified? 8. Using a free SolidWorks add-in like ProperyLinksXpress. PropertyLinksXpress is a SolidWorks add-inthat allows the easy and consistent input of custom file properties into SolidWorks documents. Advantages.. • Works inside the SolidWorks PropertyManager. • Share a user-defined list of custom property values with your design team. • Automate the entry of properties using default values and drop down lists.
