  1. SYNTHETIC POLYMERS PLASTIC FIBER ELASTOMER

  2. objectives • By the end of the class, students should be able • To explain the importance of proper disposal of synthetic polymers • To suggest ways to dispose of synthetic polymers in order to preserve the environment • To practice good habits in disposing of synthetic polymers

  3. What is Polymer ?! • Food? • Bag? • Animal? • Plant? • Cloth? • Or what? ? ? ?

  4. POLYMERS • large molecules made up of many smaller and identical repeating units -> monomers • These repeating units joins together by covalent bonds

  5. POLYMERS • The chemical process that join the monomers together - POLYMERISATION • Polymerisation can be divided into 2 types : • addition polymerisation • condensation polymerisation

  6. POLYMERS • Polymers can be divided into 2 types : • naturally occurring polymers • synthetic polymers

  7. What the different between natural polymers and synthetic polymers? ? ? ?

  8. naturally occurring polymers • Polymers that exist in plants or animals • Types of naturally occurring polymers • protein : muscles • carbohydrates : cellulose • natural rubber : latex

  9. synthetic polymers • Polymers made in industry from chemical substances • Scientists are able to copy structures of natural polymers to produce synthetic polymers trough scientific research

  10. synthetic polymers • many of raw materials for synthetic polymers are obtain from -> petroleum • types of synthetic polymers • plastics • fibers • elastomers

  11. Plastic is a synthetic polymer. Why?! ? ? ?

  12. plastics • composed of polymers of carbon and hydrogen alone or with oxygen, nitrogen, chlorine or sulfur in the backbone

  13. plastics • Properties of plastics :- • Light • strong • malleable • inert to chemical • insulators of electricity and heat

  14. plastics • example of plastics are :- • polythene (polyethylene) • polyvinylchloride (PVC) • polypropene (polypropylene) • polystyrene • Perspex • Bakelite

  15. fibers • long chain polymers that withstand stretching • example of fibers are :- • polyamide nylon, • terylene • phenol-formaldehyde (PF) • acrylic polymers

  16. elastomers • polymer that can regain its original shape after being stretched or pressed • example of elastomers are :- • Styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR) • Polyisoprene (IR) • Polybutadiene (BR) • Chloroprene Rubber (CR)

  17. Strong Inert to chemical attacks Easily moulded or shaped and be coloured Cheap Able to resist corrosion Special properties can be made according to specific needs Why ?????

  18. What is the impacts of synthetic polymers towards human and environment? ? ? ?

  19. Problems !!!!!

  20. disposal problems one

  21. Environmental pollution !!! Most of the polymers are non-biogradeable Cannot be decomposed by bacteria / decomposer So… caused disposal problem when polymer not decay one

  22. blockage of rivers two

  23. Environmental pollution !!! • Plastics items discarded • Blockage of drainage systems & rivers • So… caused flash floods two

  24. diseases three

  25. Environmental pollution !!! Polymer containers not buried in the ground Become breeding ground for mosquitoes So… caused diseases such as dengue three

  26. harmful to animals four

  27. Environmental pollution !!! • The non-biogradeable polymers thrown into rivers -> lakes -> seas • Swallowed by aquatic animals • Animals die due to chocking four

  28. pollutions five

  29. Environmental pollution !!! Open burning of polymers Released harmful, poisonous gases Cause air pollution Contributes to acid rain problem five

  30. That’s not the only impacts of plastics

  31. movie polluted environment

  32. Ways to dispose synthetic polymer properly • PYROLISIS-burn without oxygen • INCINERATION-gas is filtered • INVENT A BIODEGRADEABLE SYNTHETIC POLYMER

  33. PRACTISING GOOD HABITS IN DISPOSING OF SYNTHETIC POLYMERS • Separate the synthetic polymers from other wastes. • Recycle • Reuse

  34. Do not recycle … 1. Automotive Product Containers Including: • Motor Oil Bottles • Anti-Freeze Containers • Gasoline and Oil Additive Bottles 2. Brown Liquor Bottles 3. All Containers Marked With The Following Codes:

  35. ACTIVITY

  36. QUIZZES 1) Polymers are made up of many smaller and identical repeating units called monomers 2) The monomers join together by bond covalent 3) The chemical process that join the monomers together is called polymerization

  37. QUIZZES • 4) 2 types of polymerization: addition condensation • 5) 2 types of polymers: Natural polymer Synthetic polymer

  38. QUIZZES 6) Types of synthetic polymers: Plastics, fibers, elastomers 7) The impacts of synthetic polymers to the human and environment: Disposal problems Harmful to animals Blockage of rivers pollutions diseases

  39. Group activity!!

  40. Good luck…!!! Create a poster to give the awareness to the people in order to preserve the environment from the synthetic polymers… You may add the impacts, the way to dispose synthetic polymers or whatever that you have learn to make your poster more effective…

  41. Example…. love our environment STOP USING PLASTICS!!!

  42. Post Lab Question 1) How do you properly dispose synthetic polymers to preserve the environment? reuse Pyrolisis inceneration recycle Invent a biodegradeable synthetic polymers Separate synthetic polymers from other wastes

  43. 2) Why is it important to properly dispose of synthetic polymers? To reduce the disposal problems To prevent the diseases caused by synthetic polymers wastes To prevent the pollutions To save the animals from being dead

  44. 3) State environmental disaster occurs due to improper disposal of plastics. Flash flood acid rain

  45. 4) Do you think the usage of biodegradable polymer should be expanded? Explain. Yes. Harmless to environment Can disposed easily

  46. 5) What are the factors that hinders from using biodegradable polymers? Costly Not so strong

  47. Conclusion • Proper disposal of synthetic polymers is important in order to preserve the environment. This is because synthetic polymers bring lot of bad effects to the human and environment: a) blockage of river b) disease c) pollution

  48. There are ways to dispose synthetic polymers: a) pyrolisis b) inceneration c) use biodegradable synthetic polymers

  49. Good habits in disposing of synthetic polymers: a) recycle b) reuse c) separate synthetic polymers from the other wastes
