  1. Surface nano TiB 8 mm Depth into Titanium SGER: Exploiting Anomalous Diffusion at Polymorphic Transitions for Deeper Surface Coatings in MetalsK. S. Ravi Chandran, University of Utah, DMR 0737883 The research demonstrated that we can achieve deeper surface coatings using anomalous self-diffusion near polymorphic transition temperature in some metals. The figure (right) shows that near a to b transition of titanium, the TiB whisker coatings (figure below) are deeper (900, 910, 915C) than at temperatures far away from the transus (850, 1050C). This unusual phenomenon is investigated focusing on Ti and Fe with different surface diffusion species that are of practical significance (B, C, N) in terms of surface hardness & wear resistance Titanium Boride Nano-whisker Coating on Titanium 1050ºC 850ºC

S. Ravi Chandran, University of Utah, DMR 0737883 Summary of Broader Impacts The research is focused on discovering conditions of anomalous diffusion that can lead to deeper coatings in a shorter treatment time. This will help save energy and cost of surface hardening of metals for hardness and wear resistance (see figure at left). Thus, it has broader engineering impact with respect of surface treatment of metals. The research employed a graduate student (B. Sarma) and one undergraduate student (N. Hardin). Results of the research was presented at MS&T 2008 Materials Science and Technology Conference: Phase Stability, Diffusion Kinetics & Their Applications (PSDK-III).
