  2. Step 1 • Find a common denominator • Find a number that both denominators are factors

  3. Step 2 • Subtract the fractions

  4. Step 3 • If the top number is too small, you will need to borrow from the whole number • Make the whole number 1 less • Add 1 whole to the fraction • Make the whole have the same denominator as the fraction • Subtract

  5. Step 4 • Subtract whole numbers

  6. Step 5 • Simplify

  7. Step 6 • Check your work
