  2. Tuesday 3/6 • Act 2 scene 3 in video • Character Analysis • Update Iago’s Bestiary through Act 2 scene 3 Journals due Friday for Act 2 entries • Read Closely to analyze Character in Othello

  3. What we will watch today quickly 2.2 Shortest scene in the play We're now back on the streets of Cyprus to hear Othello's herald make a public announcement: in celebration of the Turkish fleet's destruction, Othello has declared that tonight will be a party night in Cyprus. Every man can do what pleases him best.

  4. What we will focus on Act 2 Scene 3 The drinking scene • Othello leaves Cassio in charge of Cyprus during the party and heads off to finally consummate his marriage to Desdemona • Iago works to get Cassio drunk so he will start a fight with some locals. • Oops, Cassio fights Roderigo but stabs Montano, Governor of Cyprus • Othello is called away from Desdemona to the fight scene

  5. In your journals • How does Iago convince Cassio, who admits he is a lightweight, to drink. What role do the songs play in their revelry? • We see Othello’s anger in this scene (Now by heaven, my blood begins my safer guides to rule). What does Othello do to Cassio? Is Othello’s response to Cassio’s behavior fair? Explain • Cassio cries out for his lost reputation and Iago answers him. How does Iago respond? • What is Iago’s new plan at the end of this scene?

  6. Character Analysis • Choose a character that you are most interested in following through the rest of the play. Choose from Othello, Desdemona, Iago, or Cassio • Find 2 quotes from Act 1 and 2 quotes from act 2 that describe your character/reveal who he or she is • Describe your Character in 1 paragraph • Choose any scene we have read thus far and imagine you are playing one of the roles. • Review the lines in the scene • Figure out your character’s objective in the scene • Figure out your character’s Superobjective for the play as a whole • Explain which lines (and cite line numbers) that tips off the objective
