  2. Directional Terms • Anterior / Ventral: • in front • Posterior / Dorsal: • in back • Medial: • toward the midline

  3. Lateral: • toward the side • Internal: • within the body • External: • outside the body • Proximal: • closest to the point of origin

  4. Distal: • farther from the point of origin • Superior: • upper or above • Inferior: • lower or below • Cranial: • towards the head

  5. Caudal: • towards the tailbone • Flexion: • decreasing the angle btw 2 bones • Extension: • increasing the angle btw 2 bones • Adduction: • moving toward the midline

  6. Abduction: • moving away from the midline • Eversion: • turning a body part outward • Inversion: • turning a body part inward • Pronation: • palm down, face down, body part downward

  7. Supination: • palm up, face up, body part facing upward • Deep: • away from the body surface; internal • Superficial: • toward or at the body surface

  8. Plantar: • toward the sole of the foot • Palmar: • toward the palm of the hand

  9. Body Regions of the Head • Parietal: top of head toward the back and sides. • Frontal: forehead • Occipital: back / base of skull • Temporal: sides of head • Auricular: ear • Buccal: cheek

  10. Orbital: eye socket • Mastoid: behind the ear • Nasal: bridge of nose • Mental: chin • Submental: beneath the chin • Maxillary: upper jaw • Mandibular: lower jaw • Zygomatic: cheek bone
