  1. Daniel and the king's delicacies

  2. Read: Daniel 1:5

  3. What do you think of king’s delicacies?

  4. What do you think Daniel said?

  5. Matthew 6:2, 6:5, 6:16 • Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. • “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites • 16 “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance.

  6. He says . . . • When you give • When you pray • When you fast NOT when you give, when you pray, and IF you fast.

  7. How do we fast? • Fast from certain food • Fast from some non-spiritual activities • Fast from bad word “With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.” [James 3:9-12]

  8. Why are you fasting?

  9. Why are you fasting? • We fast because fasting promotes a disciplined lifestyle • We fast because we want to be free from bodily desires • We fast because we want to be like angels with no desire for food • We fast because we want to spend more time with God • We fast because fasting is one way of martyrdom! (witnessing to God)

  10. We “choose” to fast • Memory Verse: But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies [Daniel 1:8]
