  2. Who We Are • Non-profit prevention agency • Established in the fall of 2008 • Coalition of volunteers • Representing each sector of the community • Anyone is welcome • Identify problems; develop solutions • Three full-time staff

  3. Drug-Free Communities Grant • Federal grant program (SAMHSA-ONDCP) • Established by Drug-Free Communities Act of 1997 • $125,000 per year for 5 years, renewable for 10 years • 100% in-kind match required • Goals • Increase community capacity to address substance abuse issues • Reduce youth substance abuse

  4. Level of Competition • 2012 Fiscal Year • 32 awards/500+ applications • ~6% chance of scoring high enough to be funded

Why DFC? • Multi-faceted approach • Reaches > 1/3 of Nation’s population • 2012 National Evaluation Interim Report • Shows DFC communities have successfully reduced drug and alcohol use • Past 30-Day Use in DFC communities is significantly lower than nationally-representative sample One third Amount by which the rate of current drug use in America has decreased since the late 1970s. DFC Mentoring Program • Established in 2001 • Goal: • To assist newly forming coalitions in becoming eligible to apply for DFC funding on their own • Grantees will be expected to achieve this goal by implementing the following objectives: • Strengthen organizational structure • Increase leadership and community readiness to address substance use problems • Work through strategic planning process resulting in a comprehensive action plan
