Credits & Promotion • Promotion is based strictly on # of credits earned each year: • 10th grade = 6 credits • 11th grade = 13 credits • 12th grade = 20 credits • To graduate = 28 credits • Will take 32 credits in 4 years • Early Graduation = Option available if a student passes all classes and meets graduation standards 1st semester of senior year.

Completing the Card • Choose 8 courses total front & back • You will write in 3 alternate courses • Alternates are classes that will be used if a class is not offered or closed • Choose alternates carefully because they could appear on your schedule • Courses that require teacher permission cannot be used as alternates

  10. Registration Notes • Considering Honors? • Check your previous grade in a prior subject (ex. English). You should have a final grade of 93 or higher in a regular class or 85 or higher in an honors class. • If you do not meet prerequisite for advanced course, you will need to return a waiver with parent signature to register for class.

Registration - AP • Advanced Placement • College level courses taught by EG teachers • Students can earn college credit by achieving a score of 3, 4, or 5 on AP exam • Differs from honors and regular classes in that more responsibility for learning is placed on student (summer reading, group projects, etc.) • Don’t take AP just for the extra GPA points. Take the Exam!

  12. Selecting Classes • English 10 • 3 choices – Regular, Honors, AP Prep • If you failed English 9, register for English 9 & 10. • Math • See chart for four class sequence

  15. Distance Learning Elective Notes • AP Psychology • AP World History • Courses require form with parent’s signature Classes taught by GCS teachers via videoconference

  16. Journalism, Yearbook, & Ed Media require applications. Available March 21-25 • Submit to the teacher by March 31 • For now, register for electives without these classes • If you are approved, an elective(s) will be removed

Registration Notes • Course selections are final once students register • Choices made by students determine classes offered and the number of sections taught • Pizza Analogy • When choosing courses, consider extracurricular & employment obligations • Colleges use course load as a factor in the admission decision • 1 PE Limit

Tips for Sophomore Year • Create a free cfnc.org account & complete a career interest inventory • Research 2- or 4- year colleges at cfnc.org under College Fair tab • Create a Resume of Extracurricular Activities on cfnc.org • End Freshman year with best grades possible • Over summer, visit a college to spark interest for your student

  19. Sophomore Year Register for PSAT in fall • Test Date – October 12, 2011 • Must be in Geometry or Algebra II • Utilize the test information returned during January to prepare for the SAT

  20. Sophomore Year • Apply for an enrichment or summer program • NC Governor’s Page Program • NC Summer Ventures in Science & Math • Governor’s School of NC • Become a part of the EGHS community – join a club, sport, or volunteer

  21. What Happens Now? • Class Presentations & Registration Materials given to students: March 15-18 • Return date should be noted on registration card • A reminder call will be sent when card is due • Student will meet with counselor on return date • Missing Forms anyone?
