  1. Overfishing: The Effects By: Aman, Cosimo, Phil

  2. What is OverFishing? • taking more fish out of the habit that can be replenished by sexual reproduction. • This is very harmful to the environment because the population of these fish greatly decreases. • Over years of this abuse the fragile systems collapsed and we find that there are much fewer fish then before. • Most prominent example: the cod fisheries collapse in Newfoundland.

  3. Marine and Fresh water overfishing • establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) but according to UN environment Programme’s (UNEP) World conservation Monitoring Centre in Cambridge, UK, less than 1 % of the world's oceans and seas are currently in MPAs • North Atlantic, commercial populations of cod, hake, flounder and haddock have fallen by as much as 95% in the last decade alone • According to Food and Agriculture society, 70% of the worlds fish species are either fully extinct or severely depleted. • Oceans are cleared twice as fast the rate of forests

  4. Pros of Commercial Fishing Methods • Pros: feeds world demand for seafood and huge economic impact on our GDP • Pacific drives 25-69 % of animal protein from fish • Employs more than 200 million people and generates 80 billion a year

  5. Cons • Cons: major impact on ecology of the oceans and decrease in global food stocks. • Con: in the future, we may see more fisheries collapse. •  nets and traps used injure or kill other marine animals such as sharks, swordfish. • the economical thing to do would be to save the fish population, because the industries have gotten dangerously close to collapse.

  6. Solutions to these Problems The good, and the bad

  7. Fish Farms Good • Helps the human population keep a steady supply of fish ready to be caught. • Not as much pollution is made in the process of going out to get the fish (i.e. gas to power boats. supply on ship etc.) Bad • these fish live in bacteria infested habitats • prone to disease in the close quarters of the farms • located on lakes and ponds as well as restricted areas of the oceans

  8. International Agreements • http://www.un.org/ecosocdev/geninfo/sustdev/fishery.htm • Agreement for the implementation of the provisions of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea: conservation and management of straddling fish stocks and highly migratory fish stocks“ • EU fisheries, total allowable catch (TAC) for stocks is set by the Council of Ministers. • Recent years the Council has agreed on TACs on average 46 percent above scientific recommendations, in spite of 72 percent of all assessed EU fish stocks being estimated as overexploited, with over 20 percent being fished beyond safe biological limits.

  9. Species endangered: • Whales, dolphins, dugongs • Sea turtles, some shark species • Due to loss of habitat and pollution in the oceans • Most importantly, unsustainable fishing practices

  10. Conclusion • Lets STOP OVERFISHING and go SUSTAINABLE!
