Background • Incorporates aspects of smart growth, new urbanism and green buildings • Focuses on three criteria: smart location and linkage, neighborhood pattern and design and green infrastructure and buildings • Encourages compact, mixed use development near public transit and important neighborhood amenities • Emphasizes pedestrian and bike-friendly design • Goes along with goals of SB 375 to curb suburban sprawl, reduce automobile use and improve public health • Pilot program in 2007, official launch in April 2010

Where are prime areas for LEED-ND projects? • Smart Location and Linkage • Imperiled Species and Ecological Communities • Housing and Jobs Proximity • Steep Slope Protection • Locations with Reduced Auto Dependence • Proximity to rail stations (1/2 mile) • Proximity to bus stations (1/4 mile) • Proximity to bike network (1/4 mile) • Neighborhood Pattern and Design • Access to Parks (1/4 mile) • Farmers Markets (1/2 mile) • Neighborhood Schools (1/2-1 mile)

Policy Analysis and Recommendations • There is much potential for LEED-ND in LA County • There needs to be greater analysis to identify neighborhoods, blocks and parcels that satisfy LEED-ND location requirements and credits • Municipalities, such as the city of Los Angeles should look into implementing a LEED-ND ordinance to streamline permitting and speed the process along
