  3. What functions does the drill do? • prepare seedbed • form furrows • deposit seed • cover seed • pack seedbed • fertilize • herbicide

  4. What are the parts of a drill? • seedbox: carries seed • metering device: amount of seed deposited (adjust rate to moisture in soil) • furrow opener (seed boot): shovel or disk • cover with soil (depth:seed size) (uniform depth) • packer: press wheels • ground driven mechanism

  5. Row crop planting • lister or row crop planter • plant in rows • plant on ridges, irrigate in furrows

  6. Broadcast seeding • spread seed, cover with harrow or disk • grasses • airplane when field is too wet • poor control, loss to birds
