  1. Do Now- Page- bottom pg 47 On Tuesday, Massachusetts voted not to reduce the sales tax from 6.25% down to 3%. • Why would people vote to keep higher taxes? • If you could have voted, what would you have voted- yes or no? WHY?

  2. Reasons people voted NO on #3 • The sales tax helps pay for things we all value and rely on. • We all want good schools, police and fire protection, safe roads and bridges, clean water, and quality health care. Cutting the sales tax by more than half will prevent us from achieving these goals we share. • This proposal would take away $2.5 billion in state revenue. This is about half the total amount the state sends to our communities each year to help pay for public education.

  3. Activity (a fun one!) • What we need to do as a class to make this work! • Make sure you understand all the instructions and your role- We are dividing the class into two groups. Each group will have to survive in our class society and economy by playing by the rules and roles they are given.

  4. You have a job • You have a role (group 1 or 2) and you must follow the rules of that group • You need to survive by obtaining the things you need to do your job, food, and staying healthy. • I am the bank- when you do your job, I will pay you. When you need food or healthcare I will also help you out. • DO NOT FORGET WHAT GROUP YOU ARE IN

  5. Mind Map - 47 • How did you feel during the activity? • Were you successful? • Did you like the group you were in and the rules you had to live by? Why or why not?
