  2. Thatcher • Conservative resurgence of the 1970s • Resulted from economic stagnation. • Pessimism of the 70s replaced optimism of the post-WWII 50s and 60s “economic miracle” • The Welfare State softened the blow of the economic downturn, unlike the Depression era.

Thatcher • Thatcher served as P.M. from 1979-1990 • Privatized gov’t industries. • Reduced gov’t spending • Increased private property ownership by encouraging tenants in state-owned apartments to purchase. • Confronted labor unions on rights of workers. Conservatives believed labor unions had become too powerful. Wanted cure England of the “British disease” (striking).

Francois Mitterand • Socialist Leader of France (1981-1995) • Led Socialist Party and communist allies to increase public investment and nationalization of industries. • Goal was to end economic stagnation through government spending (Keynesian economics) • Failed by 1983 and gov’t had to institute austerity measures. • Conservatives took power in the mid 1990s ending a decade of socialist leadership.
