  3. Underdog Top dog Which one symbolises the position of women in Turkey? Does it change from region to region? If yes, why? What has changed about the role of women in economy in the last 20 years? Can you give some examples?

Vocabulary items sole (adj.): belonging to one person or group; not shared e.g: She has sole responsibility for the project. e.g: The sole owner of the apartment has one foot in the grave. e.g: The company has the sole rights to market Elton John’s records. inevitable (adj.): that you cannot avoid or prevent (syn. unavoidable) e.g: After the crisis, it was inevitable that there would be job losses. e.g: A rise in the interest rates seems inevitable because of the policies of the government. e.g: Another war seems inevitable in the Middle East due to the evil regime of Bashar Al Assad.

PART B • The main idea of the text? • Despite the improved status due to the opportunities now available to women, they still suffer from inequalities. • Traditional sex roles assigned to men and women have provided them with different life styles • There has been an enormous change in the status of women due to the acquisition of certain opportunities denied to them in the past • Until recently’ women have suffered certain restrictions because of the traditional responsibilities imposed on them
