Background • Bradford & Airedale – Previously 4 PCTs • Only PCT to host Self Care for People & Self Care for Professionals – April 05 • Bradford District Health Development Partnerships • 528,000 population with 300+ languages / dialects • 1/3 live in a rural area • Approx 24% ethnic minority population – 40% births to South Asian families • High Inequalities – PCT Priority

Aims • Deliver Self Care Skills Training Course: 9 hours: 3 x 3 hours or 6 x 1.5 hours • 288 Research Participants • Target Parents of Toddlers and Workplaces (men) Resources (Sept 05) • 0.5 wte Senior Health Promotion Specialist • 0.5 wte Health Promotion Specialist Time • All trainers are skilled and experienced

  7. Challenges Making the course appropriate for each group Making the course accessible to each group e.g. child care, transport, language, gender of trainers Responding to the needs of the group

  8. Challenges (cont…) Need a good trainer who can be flexible and understand group dynamics Recruitment of groups Organising groups/logistics needs to be done by the group worker

  9. Style of Delivery Relaxed and informal Interactive Sit in a circle Get people talking and listening Wear appropriate clothes Pitch the dialogue at the right level for each group

  10. Engaging Groups What we have learnt: • Recruitment of participants is hard • Recruitment Takes time • 3 months with no groups running • Community development works • Open courses haven’t worked • Build relationships / partnerships
