  1. Endometriosis The occurrences of endometriosis in Denmark from 1980-2007 A national registry survey Maj V. Hjordt Hansen & Øjvind Lidegaard Dept of gynaecology-obstetrics at Rigshospitalet University of Copenhagen Aim: To quantify the incidence of endometriosis in Danish women through the period 1980 to 2007 and hospital contacts among these women

  2. Material & methods • Source: National Registry of Patients • Only discharge diagnoses • Both public and private hospitals • Outcome measures - Number of patients with endometriosis - The number of hospital contacts among these women

  3. Annual incidence of endometriosis in women 25-29 and 35-39 years old (new cases) Each woman counts only once Year

  4. Annual number of contacts in women with endometriosis according to age Each woman counts several times

  5. Cumulated incidence of contacts in women with endometriosis 30-34 & 45-49 years old

  6. Discussion Reasons for increase • Health seeking behaviour • Decreased acceptance of pain • Better diagnostic equipment • Better options for treatment • Delayed first full term pregnancy • An increase in the incidence of the disease • Misrepresentation of actual cases

  7. Conclusion • The number of women with endometriosis and the frequency of contacts with these women has increased. • The increase is in the order of 5-10 fold over 30 years. • The reason for this increase may be better diagnostics, improved treatment options, lower pain threshold, and an increase in incidence.
