  3. abate • Verb • To decrease in amount or intensity; to lessen or dwindle • The pain of my sunburn beganto abate after I put aloe on it.

  4. agony • Noun • Extreme physical or mental suffering; great pain • After crashing at the bottom of the hill, the snowboarder was in agony.

  5. comrade • Noun • One who associates with another; a friend or companion • Bob and Ed were old army comrades and had served together for 15 years.

  6. deliverance • Noun • State of being rescued or freed from unpleasant condition • Princess Fiona’s cries for deliverance were answered by Shrek and Donkey.

  7. perish • Verb • To be destroyed; to die • Unfortunately, my favorite oven mitts perished in the stovetop fire.

  8. prey • Noun • An animal hunted by another for food • Predators and prey are part of the food chain.

  11. ravenous Adjective Very hungry for food or some other substance; starving If you don’t eat a healthy breakfast, by the time lunch comes around you’ll be ravenous.

  12. sustenance • Noun • That which supports life; nourishment; food • Rolosand Pringles are sustenance—not healthy—but they are sustenance.
