2. Parody – Imitates or mocks another serious work or type of literature. The purpose of a parody may be to ridicule through broad humor. • Inspector Hound-stereotypical parlor mystery • Agatha Christie’s The Mouse Trap, Clue • must have an original • Satire – Literary technique in which ideas, customs, behaviors, or institutions are ridiculed for the purpose of improving society. May be gently witty, mildly abrasive, or bitterly critical, and it often uses exaggeration to force reader to see something in a more critical light. • Double Entendre – A word or expression capable of two interpretations one of which often has a risqué connotation.

3. Foil- a character who provides a striking contrast to another character. By using a foil, a writer call attention to certain traits possessed by a main character or simply enhances a character by contrast. • Andy Griffith – nurturing, sensible/Barney Fife • Metadrama, Metafictionare modes of writing that comment on their own activities: they are self-reflexive. • Tom Stoppard is a good example. • Literature is said to be self-reflexive when the author deliberately draws attention to the fictional nature of the work.
