  2. Report Topics • NASA “transformation” (re-organization) • Conferences and Workshops NASA/NSSDC Report to MOIMS DAI/IPR Plenary

  3. NASA Transformation • NASA has a new focus called ‘Exploration’ • Back to the Moon • Then on to Mars (schedule depends on budget/progress) • NASA Space and Earth Science disciplines being re-integrated at NASA Headquarters • GSFC former Director (Al Diaz) will lead at Headquarters • Former Headquarters Space Science Administrator (Ed Weiler) now GSFC Director • GSFC aligning to match Headquarters organization • Combined ‘Sun and Earth’ Science Directorate proposed to have 3 sub-organizations • Sun-Earth Exploration (incorporates much of GSFC’s previous Earth functions) • Exploration of the Universe (e.g., HEASARC, Astronomy) • Solar System Exploration (Planetary focus) • NSSDC proposed to sit under GSFC’s Solar System Exploration • Official approval anticipated early December • NSSDC currently expected to retain long-term archive responsibility for Space Science • Space and Solar Physicsr, Planetary, and Astrophysics • No guarantees for the future! NASA/NSSDC Report to MOIMS DAI/IPR Plenary

  4. NSSDC • Continues interaction with NASA HQ on Resident Archives concept, with NSSDC management, in ‘Space and Solar Physics’ discipline • See NASA report at Montreal MOIMS meeting • NASA HQ has proposed NSSDSC take over some Planetary Data System (PDS) project management functions • May or may not happen • NSSDC ‘legacy 9-track tape’ migration just starting • First 2 data sest processed - one showed documentation issues • NSSDC continues leadership (Jim Thieman) of SPASE (Space Physics Archive Search and Extract) data dictionary and implementation effort • NSSDC continues participation (Don Sawyer) in ‘Archive Certification’ task force lead by RLG and NARA NASA/NSSDC Report to MOIMS DAI/IPR Plenary

  5. Conferences and Workshops • NSSDC reported on Lessons Learned from migrations at PV-2004 conference in Frascati, September • SPASE workshop 25-26 October • Space Physics data model critique • Needs tighter ‘relationships’ definition and evolution-management approach • DEDSL view not attempted to date • Implementation architecture paper to be developed • Possible VxO prototype • XFDU presented - mixed reaction on applicability • Space and Solar Physics VxO workshop 27-29 October • HQ wants several sub-discipline (the ‘x’ in VxO) efforts • VxO concepts and other discipline experience presented • Focus groups met to address issues • Data Repository and VxO group identified key Data Repository functionality • Maps very well to OAIS functionality: point made and OAIS visibility increased • Data Model and Registry group called for partitioning SPASE data model • NARA/U of Maryland/SDSC preservation conference: 15-16 November • NSSDC (Don) moderator for ‘standards and model’ panel • Lou presenting on OAIS NASA/NSSDC Report to MOIMS DAI/IPR Plenary
