  1. The Raw Story • Mission Statement“The Raw Story is an alternative news nexus. We draw upon a panoply of news sources and select those stories we think most intriguing to an audience seeking news underplayed by the mainstream media. • At the core, our goal is to unearth and spotlight stories underplayed by the popular press, in particular those which highlight betterment and open people’s eyes to injustice throughout the world.” • -Most news outlets have only been covering the repeal aspect of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell; one reason why The Raw Story decided to report this. • Credibility • “Raw Story's reporting has been referenced by the New York Times, the Guardian, L.A. Weekly, the New York Post, the Toronto Star, The Hill, Roll Call, the Salt Lake City Tribune and The Advocate. We now average 125,000 unique visitors daily with over 375,000 page views.” 2

  2. Top Marine’s Point of View • Says that his first priority is success in Afghanistan, and that repealing DADT will hinder this success. • Young men in infantry have very intimate relationships, the repeal will affect them in many different ways. • Worried about unit cohesion, which leads to combat readiness • "There's risk involved; I'm trying to determine how to measure that risk," Gen. James Amos said. "This is not a social thing. This is combat effectiveness. That's what the country pays its Marines to do." 3

  3. Top Marine’s Persuasion • Ethos- As a top marine official, he has credibility in the topic he is discussing. • Says that repealing don’t ask don’t tell will hinder success in Afghanistan • By relating this to a bigger issue, he can gain more support. • Survey was given about families of the military and DADT, while most families think it could be repealed-- Amos made no comment. 4
